Identity is a judgment.
It is an assessment: where am I in the great scheme of things—what is my status, socially, religiously, spiritually?
Whenever you meet someone, your thoughts throw up a false persona, an imaginary personality, a mask. The purpose of the mask (identity) is to stop you (and others) from inquiring any deeper.
You live with this mask; you go to bed with it and in the morning you put it on when you wake up. When you make love, you have to make love through the mask.
Masks do not interact; only consciousness can interact.
